By Nicole Castrellon, Virginia Elite H.S. Sports Reporter (Battlefield H.S., VA) - January 14, 2012

In the 1st quarter, the Bobcats won the tip-off and then were able to put 2 points on the board following a foul on #12 (Trevor Blondin). #35 (Hamed Ghafoori) then responded by sinking 2 points for the Pioneers. The Bobcats were able to pull ahead with a number of 3 pointers. It was not enough though, as the Pioneers had a one point lead at the end of the period.

In the second quarter the Bobcats were able to take an early lead, beating the Pioneers 17-27 with 6:33 left in the period. A 3 pointed made by #12 (Trevor Blondin) pulled the Bobcats lead up by 12 points to 29-41. The third quarter went by smoothly, much like the second quarter, with the teams going back and forth contributing to the score, however the Pioneers were just unable to crack the Bobcats defense, who proved to be a little overwhelming for the Pioneers. \

In the final minutes of the game the score wass set at 68-70, with the Bobcats pulling a 2 point lead. When it seemed like the Pioneers were about to tie the game, a traveling call was made, turning the ball back over to the Bobcats and giving them a 4 point lead with 3 seconds left in the game. A last second foul on #5 (Roman Hall) contributed one more point for the Bobcats and ended the game for a 5 point Bobcat win.

The Final score of the game was PHS 68- BHS 73. The top scorers’ for the Bobcats were #4 (Tarik Diggs) with 17 points, #5 (Roman Hall) with 16 points, #2 (Terrell Walker) with 12 points, and #12 (Trevor Blondin) with 12 points. PHS’ top scorers were #1 (AJ Cowthran) with 14 points.

Battlefield Bobcats Claw Pass John Paul the Great Wolves
by Bernaldo Ormond-December 10, 2011

(John Paul the Great, Dumfries, VA) Battlefield High School (BHS) Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated John Paul the Great High School (JPGHS) Boys Varsity Basketball team with second, third and fourth quarter rallies.  BHS Head Coach, Kurt Pauly, team was able to defensively maintain the high power team offense of JPGHS Head Coach, Angelo Hunt.  JPGHS 6’7” big man Skye Johnson was unable to dominant and even his two handed dunk attempt was contested with BHS multiple defensive weapons.  Coach Hunt team had the home team advantage with a very supportive JPGHS student cheering section. However, the cheering section roaring support was not enough to help the JPGHS team pull out a win.

It was an exciting non-conference game from beginning to ending it was obvious that  both teams were prepared for tonight’s competitions. However, JPGHS foul troubles did not help them down the stretch. Four of JPGHS starting five players fouled out with little over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The leading scorer’s for Battlefield High School were Tarik Diggs with 19 pts, Roman Hall with 15pts and Terrell Walker (pictured) with 14pts.   Although only scoring 14 points 6"5 Terrell Walker ability to play multiple offensive and defensive positions was very exciting to watch.

John Paul the Great high scorers were Aaron Young with  (#12)  with 14pts and David Long with 13 pts. BHS record advances to 1-3 and JPGHS falls to 2-2 for the start of their respective 2010-2011 Boys Varsity Basketball season.
