Week #4 of
the Hoop Magic Fall League is getting better, after a few
early wrinkles the teams are now settling in. VA Elite
still remains at the top of both the Varsity and Junior
Varsity standings, but there are some upcoming games that
will interest VA Elite.
After last
week game against a tough Battlefield team Oakton continued
their winning ways by remaining undefeated by knocking
off Fairfax in a good game.
Broad Run,
Briar Woods, Herndon, BRYC, Stone Bridge and McLean are
sitting with 1 defeat on their records but the upcoming week
will begin to separate the teams as the 1 lost teams will be
playing each other. Week after week the league
continues improve as players are lining up and play the best
teams and players and the people in attendance what to see
these games. Notably last week colleges are starting
to take notice of the players and the quality of the
league.
Kevin
McGaughey
Senior, Guard/Forward
Broad
Run High School
Broad
Run is led by 6"6 senior shooting guard/forward
Kevin
McGaugheyone
of the top 2010 players in the DMV Metropolitan area as
noted by Capitolhoops.com and VAElitehoops.com. For
those who don't know Kevin he is a outstanding
basketball player that has competed throughout the
summer AAU/showcase season against some of the
talent in the nation. Playing for 2008-09 Div
III Coach of the Year Joe Costello, Kevin was
selected to the 2008-09 Dulles All-District Team and
has received the attention of many college
recruiters.
Along
with his VA Elite 17AAU teammates Rashad Gadson
(Westfield), Kris McNeil and Andrew Daniels (Oakton)
and Antonio Butler (South County) all playing in the
fall league, this past summer they captured the
Myrtle Beach Big Shots I Championship and finished
in the Big Shots II final four and competed in the
gold bracket in most of the summer showcase
tournaments.
This
week Kevin battle two-sport star Warren Denny of
Concorde District Centreville High school in a well
played competitive game. As most of the teams around
the beltway are playing in other leagues the Hoop
Magic Fall league offers an opportunity for players
that normally want compete against each other unless
they meet on the AAU circuit to test their skills
and to really how accurate are the writings and
ranking.
Sunday
Each
week the ladies of Stonewall Jackson, Paul VI, Osbourn
Park, Robinson and MT Assassins are competing hard
making the league well worth coming out to see. Some of the
may not be on national ranking list but seeing them play
against some of the best players in the state and in some
cases the county makes for interesting match ups as the
league progressives week by week. The player that caught our
attention this week was Maya Singleton, Paul VI freshmen.
When we first saw her play we thought that she was an upper
classmen but to our surprise she is an freshman! WOW
Maya ability
around the hoop and ability to block shots was very
surprising, not only does she posses a good understanding of
the game but she plays within the team concept and is very
coachable, another star northern Virginia player of the
rise.
Maya and
Ashley Lambert another very good player defeated Langley in
game where they experience and athletic abilities was to
much for Langley over come. We look forward to some
key games as the top teams will match up against each other
putting some of the best players on the floor against each
other.
