Week #3
October 4, 2009
Briar Woods
(64) vs. West Springfield (26)
After
losing in the first two weeks, the West Springfield Spartans
looked to improve on their 0-3 in week #3. This week they
faced a good Briar Woods Falcons team led by sophomore point
guard Miles
Tate,
also looking to improve on their 1-1 record and hope to
capture their second win of the season.
Both teams
came out very aggressive at the start of the game, then the drought
came for the Spartans as they went cold for several minutes
but the Falcons seemed to hit a hot streak as they began
converting on every shot they took. Briar Woods went
on a quick run to to close out the half with a 38-17 lead.
The Falcons continued to dominate in the second half as
their relentless pressure on defense forced many turnovers,
which then turned into fast break opportunities on the
offensive end.
Battlefield
(41) vs. Centreville (39)
This game
proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season so
far, as the Battlefield Bobcats and the Centreville Wildcats
played a highly contested game with the Bobcats winning on a
buzzer beater. The pace of the game was intense from
the start, with both teams playing tight defense, causing
problems for both squads offensively. The Bobcats held a
15-9 lead with 7:37 remaining in the first half, but the
Wildcats refused to crumple under pressure. As the
first half came to a close, the Wildcats slimmed the lead
down to one, but the Bobcats remained in the lead holding a
1 point advantage going into halftime. As the battle
continued in the second half, with neither team allowing any
opportunities for their opponent to take a comfortable lead.
The Bobcats’ rebounding was their strong point, which
allowed them to convert on many second chance shots.
With one minute remaining, the Bobcats held a 3-point lead.
That was quickly erased with a 3-pointer by the Wildcats,
tying the game at 39-39. With 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation.
As the Wildcats prepared to inbound the ball,
Bobcats’ guard Evan Payton stole the inbounds pass and
scored the game winning lay-up, as time expired in regulation
allowing Battlefield to escape with a 41-39 win over
Centreville.
Notre Dame
(32) vs. BRYC (55)
After
losing to McLean in week 2, Notre Dame looked to rebound
against BRYC this week. BRYC was not looking to be the first
victim of a young Notre Dame team. McLean's offensive
presence quickly proved too much for Coach Jay Williams
Notre Dame team as McLean came away with a dominating 55-32
victory.
The game
began with BRYC quickly setting the tone by applying a
frantic intense full court pressure defense that Notre Dame
simply could not get anything going on the offensive
end. As Coach Williams went into halftime looking for
answers for his team to come back in the second half to make
it a game.
Stone
Bridge (54) vs. Osbourn (40)
Nik
Brown, Junior, Guard
Stone
Bridge High School
Stone
Bridge is led by senior guard Richie
Berry
and junior Nik
Brownone
of the top 2011 guards in the DMV Metropolitan area. Perhaps
one of the biggest surprises of the fall league season is
the success the 2-1 Stone Bridge Bulldogs. After losing a
heartbreaker to rival team Virginia Elite in week #1, the
Bulldogs took care of the Fairfax Rebels in week 2, and
looked to get a winning record against the Osbourn Eagles.
While Osbourn proved to be tough offensively, the Bulldogs
controlled the tempo of the game, and walked away with a
54-40 victory. The Bulldogs quickly established the
pace of the game with good offensive movement as well as
good penetration to the basket. The Eagles remained close
though, playing mistake free basketball and hitting the
shots they needed to. The Bulldogs went into halftime
leading 29-24. The Bulldogs found their niche in the
second half offensively, as they began to connect on a high percentage
of shoots, as well as making their way to the foul line.
6"8 Isaac Freeman of the Eagles provided a strong
defensive presence in the paint, but the Bulldogs were able
to maintain their poise, which allowed them to capture the
victory 54-40.
NOVA Suns
(27) vs. Freedom (29)
NOVA Suns

that has yet to turn the corner this season. However, the
Eagles showed up for this game, upsetting the Suns 29-27 in
the final seconds of the game. The Suns came out
firing early in the first half, and it appeared that they
would control the pace of the game. However, the Suns
quickly became plagued by turnovers, and the Eagles took
advantage. The Suns he ld a 16-14 lead at the half, with the
Eagles quickly making up ground. The Eagles continued
to hinder any offensive flow by the Suns with tight defense,
making the game one of the most competitive of the day. As
the game neared its end, the Freedom offense stepped up and
began to hit shots. With the game tied at 27 apiece with
less than ten seconds remaining, Freedom drove inside and
nailed a lay-up, sealing a 29-27 victory, their first of the
fall season.
Virginia
Elite (40) vs. School Without Walls (23)
Virginia
Elite looked to keep the momentum going in week 3 against
the School Without Walls (SSW) from Washington, D.C.. After
a slow first half offensively, VA Elite took over and
claimed a 40-23 win. The game started with only 10:00
in first half regulation due to a late arrival by SWW.
In the second half VA Elite found their comfort zone Aram
Martin (6"8 Sophomore, Forward)
provided much needed inside containment and the trio of
Antonio Butler
(6"6 Senior Forward),
Rashad Gadson
(5"7 Senior Point Guard) and
Devin
Ballam (5"10 Junior Guard) quickly
began to pull away from SWW. After it became apparent that
VA Elite would win the game, the Elite began cycling in
their substitutes getting everyone in the game. The Elite
ended the game with a 40-23 victory.
Seton (26)
vs. McLean (39)
After
defeating the NOVA Suns last week, Seton looked to capture
another win against the McLean Highlanders. However, the
Highlanders continued their offensive success from last
week’s victory against Notre Dame, and soundly defeated
Seton 39-26. The Highlanders immediately jumped on top
of Seton, showing their offensive prowess, while pressuring
Seton on defense. Seton simply couldn’t get anything going
offensively. In the second half the Highlanders continued to
dominate opening up with a 5-point run to bring the score to
23-7. As the Highlanders began to cycle in their
substitutes, Seton was able to go on a bit of a late run,
but it was to avail, as they lost 39-26.
Oakton (49)
vs. Battlefield (45)
The contest
between the AAA Concord district Oakton Cougars and
Battlefield Bobcats from the AAA Cedar Run district. This
was the Battlefield Bobcats’ second game of the morning,
and just like the first ended in dramatic fashion, putting
on yet another exciting ending to the week. The Bobcats
controlled most of the game, but in the end, the Oakton
Cougars claimed a 49-45 victory in overtime.
The Cougars
are led seniors Kris
McNeil and Andrew
Daniels (AAU
Teammates). As the game began, both teams showed good half
court offense. However, the Cougars struggled with turnovers
early, allowing the Bobcats to take a slim lead. As the end
of the first half neared, the Bobcats began to struggle with
foul shooting, allowing the Cougars to trim the lead
down.
The second half proved to be a true test, as
neither team seemed to lose an ounce of intensity. The
Bobcats took advantage of turnovers by the Cougars, and
began to pull away to an 8 point lead with 16:11 remaining.
The Cougars continued to battle and cut the lead down to 5
points with 4:12 remaining. The Cougars’ offense continued
to make big plays at the right time, and with 12.4 seconds
remaining they tied the game at 40, thus sending it into
overtime. In overtime, the Cougars’ offense didn’t
lose a step and continued to pound at a fatigued Bobcats’
squad. In the end, they claimed an exciting 49-45 victory
