Joey Goodson former assistant coach after playing four years for the St. Francis University Red Flash under head coach Bobby Jones.

During his tenure Coach Goodson responsibilities included assisting with off-campus recruiting, on-court instruction, and scouting.

Goodson played for Saint Francis for four seasons prior to joining the staff. He saw action in 105 games, including 62 starts, during his stellar career.
Known as a tremendous defensive presence, Goodson was third on the team with a career-high 31 steals in 2004-05 despite missing several games with an injury. He was tabbed the Northeast Conference’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy’s Basketball Magazine prior to his senior year, and went on to finish his career with 73 steals and 193 assists, while averaging 4.5 points per game and 2.0 rebounds per game. During his senior campaign, Goodson averaged 6.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.

Under the direction of Jones, he was a member of the only Red Flash men’s basketball team in program history to finish with three straight winning seasons in the Northeast Conference. He helped lead Saint Francis to three straight appearances in the NEC Tournament.

High School: Lettered four seasons as a forward for Coach Doug Lipscomb at Wheeler High School ... Helped his team to a 57-6 record during his last two years ... Averaged 19.3 points, 12.1 boards and three blocks during his senior season ... Shot 57 percent from the field and 75 percent from the line ... Poured in 35 points in a game against Marietta in the regional finals ... Earned all-county, all-area, all-state and Street & Smith All-America honors ... Scored 27 points in a contest against Pope High as a junior ... Went on to average 13 points and 13 rebounds per game ... Set the career record for rebounds at the school ... Was invited to Nike's ABCD Camp and was rated among the top 150 prospects in the nation by several scouting services.

At Virginia Tech:

1996-97: Moved into the starting lineup late in the season and started seven of the Hokies' last 13 games ... Was 5-of-5 from the field on the way to a season-best 11 points against East Tennessee State ... Had his best rebounding game against William & Mary with six ... Scored eight points against UNC Greensboro on 4-of-6 shooting from the field ... Picked up seven points versus Fordham ... Got his first start at Wake Forest and played a season-high 35 minutes ... Registered a pair of steals against the Demon Deacons ... Played in every game but the Hokies' home meeting with St. Bonaventure ... Averaged 3.1 points and 1.7 rebounds a game.

1997-98: Started in every game but the Hokies' home meeting with Duquesne ... Hit 10 of 13 shots on his way to a 20-point effort against Tennessee-Martin ... Also added 20 points versus Radford ... Had his best rebounding game against Xavier with 12, including five offensive boards ... Netted 12 points and eight rebounds in the win at William & Mary ... Had 19 points against North Carolina ... Scored 12 points and grabbed 11 boards in the victory over East Tennessee State ... Was 9-for-14 from the field for an 18-point effort in the home win over St. Joseph's ... Had 11 points at Dayton and 12 points and nine boards at Xavier on the Ohio road swing ... Swatted three shots in back-to-back games against George Washington and Duquesne ... Versatile performer who played both guard positions as well as small forward…Very intelligent and well-rounded player...Good passer and solid defender.

2004-05: Played in 15 games off the bench…Tallied two points and two assists in season-high 17 minutes in season-opener versus American (Nov. 15)…Grabbed three rebounds and had two assists in road win at James Madison (Jan. 31)…Two assists and a steal against Towson (Feb. 5)…Went 2-2 from the free throw line in home win against George Mason (Feb. 14).

2003-04: Appeared in 24 games, all off the bench…Hit .500 on three-pointers (3-6)…Season highs with five points and 20 minutes against North Carolina A&T (Dec. 15)…Also had three rebounds, three assists and three steals against the Aggies…Matched season high with five points at home against James Madison (Feb. 18)…Three rebounds in home victory against George Mason (Jan. 17)…Three assists in win at Towson (Feb. 14)…Two steals in home win against Delaware (Jan. 7).

2002-03:  Sat out the season per NCAA transfer rules. 

2001-02: Played in 27 of UNC Asheville’s 28 games as a rookie and averaged 11.3 minutes per contest…Racked up 13 steals in 13 Big South games, including a season-high four swipes in a win over High Point (Jan. 16)...Dished out 31 assists and committed just 22 turnovers for the year...Amassed career-bests of 10 points and five assists at Coastal Carolina (Jan. 23)...Also contributed seven points in 28 minutes off the bench in the High Point win...Pulled down five rebounds in a league victory at Elon (Feb. 11).

High School: A first team all-conference selection as a senior for Pine Forest High School…also named to the all-region squad after his senior campaign…Averaged 16 points per game during his final year at Pine Forest, including a 31-point outing…Cousin of University of Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel...

Tournament and also MVP of the New England Invitational Prep Tourney.....An all-state performer in both basketball and football at South Lakes High, the same high school that produced Grant Hill....

2001-02: Came through with nine points and 11 boards in a 66-61 win over Iona on Nov. 24...Had 11 points with two key treys in a 59-57 win over Buffalo on Nov. 29....Scored a career-high 30 points with seven treys (fifth most in school history) at Yale on Dec. 11....Scored 20 points on Dec. 28 at Brown....Had 13 points with six assists in a 75-62 win at George Washington on Jan. 26....Coach Jim Baron's first recruit at Rhode Island.

2002-03: Tallied a game-high 26 points including the game-winner with :02.2 left to propel the Rams to a 73-71 (OT) win over Southern Cal on Nov. 26 in the first game ever at the Ryan Center.

Added 26 points vs. Kent State on Dec. 4 with five treys....Scored 24 points in a come-from-behind 73-71 upset at Providence on Dec. 7....Had 14 points including four treys in a 71-68 triumph at Iona on Dec. 23...Hit 26 points (8-10 free throws) in an 88-80 loss Jan. 5 at St. Bonaventure...Had 19 points (3-3 treys) in an 81-69 win at Yale on Jan. 8...Registered Rhode Island's first double-double of the year with 19 points and 11 boards in 75-63 win over Fordham on Jan. 11...Had 24 points with four treys in a 75-73 win over Duquesne on March 10...Scored a team-best 18 points with four treys at Dayton on March 13 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
