June
2008, Teaching
the Game as it Should be Played. Many of you may not know Coach
Ronald Wiley but if you are around the gyms in Northern Virginia you
have probably crossed his path. He is a student of the game and teaches
the game the only way he knows how to "The Right Way"! His
success within the Reston Youth Association (RYA) is only remarkable.
His teams have won over 5 Division Championships and produced several
league All-Star players that have gone on to play in high school
basketball in the metropolitan area (Washington, D.C. and Northern
Virginia) as well as collegiate basketball. What programs get when his players move
on are solid players, great kids and solid students. |
Coach
Wiley (pictured coaching his 2006 Fairfax Division 1 Reston Youth team -
Regular and Tournament Champions) also serves as the Girls Jr. Varsity Assistant Coach at Robinson
High School in Fairfax, VA where he has taken his brand of coaching and
applies those same principals and has produced the same results.
Some have crossed the path of this fiery Coach who
expects his players to execute his instructions to the letter. When
players are in question he has no problem making his
instructions clear. Recently while his Hoop Magic 16U team was playing in a
tournament he instructed his players to execute a fast break and they elected to do it their
way. Immediately he called a timeout
and expressed his feelings to all. The next fast break opportunity his
team executed it with precision leading them to victory.
Some
players are reluctant to play for him simply because of
what he demands in practice. Precise execution, and a STRONG mental approach to
game is what gets the job done. One of his famous quotes is " What
I teach is "College Level Basketball" and the results are amazing!

Some of his
current players Rashad Gadson
(Herndon High), Jamal Cooper (South Lakes High), Trevor Swinley (Flint
Hill) have been with him for several winning years with Reston Youth,
Nova United and now Hoop Magic. To note how he has developed his kids in 2006 after winning the Fairfax Division 1
Championship, then winning the regular season championship in the
Maryland/DC Youth League under Nova United, his point guard was selected as an All-Star in
both leagues. Then went on to attend the 2006 Adidas Phenom Camp in San Diego,
CA with the top 200 players in the class of 2010 in the country, Rashad
was ranked as the 7th best point guard at the camp, then went on to be selected to the All
Freshmen team at the Hoop Group Basketball Camp in New Jersey. Rashad's
parents contend that his success on the court was a direct result of the
teaching of Coach Wiley. One
of the best players in the 2010 Class, Tyler Thornton (Duke Commit) now a player with
D.C. Assault and Gonzaga High School in the District of Columbia
(Washington, D.C.) is another
player who got his feet wet with Coach Wiley. Rashad,Tyler and
Jamal played on the same team in the RYA that won three consecutive
division 1 championships.
Coach
Wiley remains one of the best teachers and implementers of the
game. Lookout for his Hoop Magic 16u team.
