(Arlington,
VA) -- The hype of the Bishop O'Connell vs. Gonzaga game
could be felt before entering the gym. When you made
your way into the gym though, people felt the
excitement overwhelm them, as a sold out crowd poured
in to see the game. The O'Connell home crowd got their
money's worth, as the Knights pulled out a stunning
46-44 victory over the top ranked Gonzaga Eagles.
The Eagles took control in the first quarter, as the
Knights struggled to stop the legendary Eagle offense.
Six points from Ian Hummer gave the Eagles a 12-7
advantage after the first eight minutes.
In the second quarter, the Knights closed the gap on
the Eagles, as they began to score on their outside
jumpers. The Knight defense was able to hold Duke
bound Tyler Thornton scoreless in the first half, as
well as holding Cedrick Lindsay to three points, which
helped them close in on the Eagles. David Eismeier
scored a 3-pointer with four seconds before the half
that brought 21-20 still in favor of the Eagles.
The Knights found out how to beat the Eagles in the
third, as their offense seemed to run flawlessly
against the Eagles. A balanced effort from the
Knights' offense, as well as holding the Eagles to
just eight points, gave the Knights a 36-29 lead with
just eight minutes left in the game.
Fans from both sides could hardly contain themselves
throughout the course of the fourth quarter, as the
game came down to the wire. Ian Hummer put up seven
points to keep the Eagles afloat. A late run by the
Eagles brought them to within 3 points with less than
three minutes in the game. However, the Eagles
struggled with their foul shooting in then, which
secured a 46-44 victory.
